Very sick discus

August 21st, 2010

I have 8 discus in a 125 gal. tank, along with 2 cory cats and 3 dwarf plecos. All was well for about 4 months. Now, 3 of my discus have the clamped fins, very rapid breathing. and look as if all their body slime is gone two also have eyes clouded over. but, no white pheces to speak of. What can i do????
Reply:
Your fish is suffering from a very serious bacteria infection (Clamped fins,
cloudy eyes) and Gill Fluke (Breathing rapidly).

You should quarantine them in a hospital tank.
Give them a Potassium Permanganate bath.
Then apply Formalin plus Methylene Blue solution to the hospital tank.
Dosage: 100 liters of tank water / 2 to 3 ml. of Formalin.
Repeat this for three days.

Day 4 – 6
Treat them with Acriflavine solution plus salt.

Bullying

August 11th, 2010

I have an adult pair which have yet to breed. The male fish has started to harass the female. The result of this is that the female now has a badly torn tail. I have also seen this in a blue diamond pair. What is the cause of this?

Reply:
This is quite a headache problem.
It is quite common things that used to happen.
It is sometime male fights the female; or female fights the male.

Somebody is stubborn; do not want to start work, will get bitten.
Separate them temporary or pair up with other fish if possible.

Eating their eggs …

August 5th, 2010

My discus laying eggs but they starting eating their eegs, why?

Reply:
By instinct, the parents will not eat their eggs. They will protect them instead. If the eggs are eaten up then you must find out the reason. Do you breed them in a breeding tank, which has bare bottom? Or they laid eggs in a show tank with many other fish.

If there are other fish in the tank, surely they will be eaten up. You must create an ideal environment for them to breed happily. Positioning of tank is also important. They should not be disturbed.

Sick discus – ich (Ichthyophthirius multifilis)

July 29th, 2010

I bought two discus a red melon and a white scorpion. The red melon had some kind of ich or parasite. The white scorpion had the same but also is wasting away. I’ve had them for two weeks and they still won’t eat. I treated for external parasites, but they still won’t eat. Help!!

Reply:
The fish will feel stress after transferring from one place to another place. They must be carefully handled.

If you are sure is ich: Raise the temperature to 31 degree C.
Apply Methylene Blue solution with salt.

If it is not eating problem, apply two tablespoon full of Epsom salt.
Water changed and repeat the treatment for second day.
On the third day she should be eating.

Care of mated pair and their eggs

July 25th, 2010

I have 5 discus in a 55 gallon. The water is perfect and two have laid eggs on a leaf and are guarding it with a lot of care. What do I do? about feeding changing the water. what about the other tank mates? I have a 10 gal. should I get it ready for the fry? I am very pleased to see this happen but I didn’t think it would happen so soon. I got all my discus when they were little 2.5 now they about 4.

Reply:
I know how you feel as I have experience this before.
Anyway congratulation!

You have a 10 gallon tank then make it a maternity ward.
You prepare the 10 gal. tank in this way:
Transfer 10 gal. of water from the main tank to the maternity tank.
Cut the leaf and place it at the bottom of the maternity tank.
Cover the leaf with a wire mesh.
Then transfer the pair to the maternity tank carefully.

Apply Methylene Blue solution to the maternity tank.
You cannot leave the pair together with other fish.
They have to work very hard to guard the eggs.
Some more while the fries are free swimming . . . .

Power of the filter

July 22nd, 2010

1) I was wondering how can I know the exact power of the external filter I should be using for my aquarium? (aquarium dimensions:L=150cm, H=105cm,W=28cm)
2) Can I use a mirror as a background?

Reply:
There are many types of filters in the market.
You can get the local pet shop people to help.
Placing a mirror at the back as a background is wonderful.
It would not disturb the fish.

Changing Water

July 21st, 2010

What do you mean by 80% volume drain?

Reply:
It means you let out 80% of tank water.
You have 20% water left in the tank.
ThenĀ  you top up 80% of fresh water.

My Discus have dark colour and set in the corner …

July 16th, 2010

I have a new 60 gal tank that I bought from a trade show that the pet store in town was having. It came with two wild caught green Discuses, I had to move the tank and start it that night it was stressful for the discus and for me. The discuses have been in the tank for 3 weeks and they just set in the corner and hardy move about the aquarium, I was wondering if this is normal. The water in the aquarium is, soft dH 4.48 mg/l, PH 7.5, KH 80 mg/l and the water is tanned with driftwood and peat and softening pillows. The temp is at 83.5 and there are a few plants and I am planning to get more. The discuses are dark in colour and set in the back corner. Is there any think I can do to get them to move around more?

Reply:
When the fish hide at a corner, it is because of the new environment. She needs time a adjust it.
When she turns dark in color, it indicates she in not feeling well or falling sick.
Put the fish in a hospital tank.
Treat them with acriflavine solution add salt.
Water changed and repeat the treatment for 3 – 4 days.

Fish Turns Black Revisited

April 5th, 2008

I have seven discus in a 75-galloon tank. They were all introduced at the same time about 3 months ago. Six of the seven are doing great. About two weeks ago the seventh turned black started hiding
and stopped eating. It looks like it is about on its last leg. I have a couple of questions though.
1. Should I quarantine it?
2. What should I treat it for?
3. Should I treat the other six even though they appear to be very healthy right now?

Reply:
1. Yes. You should quarantine it in the hospital tank.
Treat her with Acriflavine solution plus salt.

2. The other six you can treat them with Formalin.
Dosage: 100 liters of tank water / 2 to 3 ml. of Formalin.
