Discus breeding & feeding

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

I am a hobbyist and have discus for nearly 2yrs. They are laying eggs but they are not hatching . Does the temp got to do something? The male & female are excellent. Pls give some tips please also suggest food timing.

Reply:
Laying eggs not hatching
1. Could be both are female.
2. They will take turns to spawn.
3. Eggs are not fertilized. Definitely not hatched out.
4. Take one male, which you are sure he is. Pair them up temporally.
5. Then you will confirm their sex.

If it is a mated pair
1. Apply anti fungus solution after spawned.
2. Use wire mesh to cover the eggs.
3. If eggs turn white again, separate them. Let the male rest for some time.
4. Of course the temperature is important. Too cold, the chances of hatching out are less.

Food timing for fry
1. From larva to fry free swimming, they don’t eat.
2. Second day of free swimming the parents will take care of them. The babies get the food from their parents.
3. After one week or so, you will introduce first baby-food: Artemia or brine shrimp.
4. Then daphnia, worm, fish burgle or Tetra-bit.

Fish become black and die …

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

I am new to discus keeping. Recently I bought 2 discus to try out. After 2 weeks, one of them became black and died. This discus was the more active of the two. Then I bought another 2
discus last week and one of them has become black but not dead yet. Looks like it’s not going to last. Why do these fish become black and died?

Reply:
You must quarantine your new fish before you introduce them into the tank.
Otherwise either your fish or the new fish will get sick.
Put your new fish in a separate tank. Treat them with Formal in solution (35%-40%): 1ml to 2ml to 100 liters of water. Change water and apply same treatment for three days.

Beginner

I have recently purchased a 46-gallon bow front tank and currently planning my tank. I decided against salt water due to the fact I move about 3 times in one year. I have loved discus since I started reading up on them in “Tropical Fish Hobbyist.” My question is what would you recommend as a general setup for my 46 gal? I was planning on spending $400-$600 on supplies and such.I am unsure if a heavily planted tank is my best option or not, but am willing to do pretty much anything for a discus tank. My tap water here has 7.2 pH, no total ammonia, no chlorine and hard water. I am planning on purchasing a separate 40 breeder tank so that I can adjust the water before hand to suit discus and use it for bi-weekly water changes (so I don’t have to change water with fish in it).

Reply:
1. You mean you want to set up a community tank for discus. That’s beautiful
2. Heavily planted tank looks wonderful and attractive. You need to supply heavy bubbles to provide sufficient oxygen at night
3. Plant some Amazon sword plants, which have broad leaves. That can give them good environment to lay eggs on the leaves
4. Water pH 7.2 is ok

Discus not eating

Monday, March 28th, 2005

I have an 80 gallon tank with about 15 largediscus….About 8 of them are not eating….I also added a few new ones andthey are not eating either. I constantly do water changes and i feed them frozen and live bloodworms…I’ve noticed some of the ones not eating are pooping white stuff….could they have parasites and if so, how do i get rid of them?

Reply:
1. Are they eating before you introduced the new fish into the tanks?
2. The new fish should be quarantine at least two weeks.
3. The white stuff must be fungus.
4. Add Methylene Blue solution plus salt be should able to get rid of fungus.

Discus reproduction

After convert eggs to little discus fishes, after 1 day thay will die. Why?

Reply:
They are due to many reasons as follow:

1. The water quality is not right.
2. The eggs not fertile.
3. The environmental factors. The fish get frightened, or not secured, and then they destroy them.

Fish food

Friday, March 25th, 2005

1. What is the volume that you use for the spirulina into your food mixture.
2. What brand do you use normally?
3. What type of baby milk powder do you use for your mixture? Does the milk effect the water quality?
4. What type of multi vitamin do you use? Is it powder or capsule?
5. Do you put gelatin or jelly into the food mixture?

Reply:
1.We don’t give Spirulina to our fish every day. Once a week, we mix in the food and feed them. The combination is 1 gm S. per 100 gm burgle.
2.Any brand as long as it’s prepared for aqua culture use.
3.Any baby milk powder will do. It’s a perfect food for baby. It will cloud the water. Change water after feeding.
4.Any multi vitamin can be used. Feed them once a week.
5.No gelatin or jelly. The burgle must be in the freezer, frozen before use.

Water Change

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

I need a detailed description about how to change the water in my tank. Its a 29 gallon fresh h2o tank and I need to know how and what temp water to put in it.

Reply:
1.Let’s say the water level is 12″.
2.And you want 100% water changed.
3.Siphon or let go 8″ of water, and then turn on the in coming water.
4.Carry on siphoning the remainder 4″ of water until you feel that the water is clean. Then you can stop siphoning and slowly top up the water 12″.
5.Add the water conditioner to get rid of chlorine. That’s it.

Water pH and temperature.
1.The pH and water temperature cannot maintain constant all the time.
2.But the fish can adjust the change of pH and temperature to suit them. But the change should be gradual.
3.The tank has 4″ of water. This is the pH and water temperature in the tank. The incoming water you add in has different pH and temperature. You mix them together slowly. The fish will adjust the pH and temperature while you top up the water.

Discus Not Eating

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

I just bought this new adult discus from an local ad in newspaper. He/she is a fully grown Blue Turquoise discus with full colour. I bought the discus on Saturday and has acclimatize it. My tank is 6x2x2 with one small discus and tetras. My water Ph is around about 6.5 – 7, temperature 30C. I do 20% water change every 3 days and filtration is adequate.

My new discus has not been eating for around about 5 days now. He doesn’t turned black or anything but he just kept hiding. He come up occasionally but never take the food. The people I bought it from said that he just settling in and it might take around about 4-5days but it has been 5 days and he is getting smaller but still look healthy.

The small discus settle within 2 days and now madly looking for food and I could touch it. I am feeding my discus beef heart, bloodworms, live worms, flake and Tetra Bits.

How you get this discus to eat and make it like the other one. In his old tank, this discus is always on the look out for food and not afraid of people. What is the longest day that discus not eating until they die, which I hope doesn’t happen to mine. Also, they said it is not good to use carbon for your filter, is this true?

Reply:
1.I suppose your tank is 72″x24″x24″. Let’s say the water level is 18″ height. There are 112.5 gallons of water. You can easily put about 30 of 4″ fishes.

2.Now you have 2 adults and a small fish. How you feel, if three of you stay in a big house, which can accommodate about 30 people. The little kid is innocent. He moves around without fear. The two adults with a bit of imagination they feel uneasy and not secure. They will take time to get use of the new environment.

3.In this big house, if you can’t get 20 adults, then you get 20 kids. These kids will move freely everywhere in the building. Upstairs, downstairs, garden, rooms, they will explore. Any food they can get, they eat or just taste it, whether nice or not.

4.The two adults will soon feel no fear and follow the kids to every corner the kids go.

5.Your pH, water temperature and water change are ok.

6.The fish can last for months without food. The two adults fish will eat when you are not around.

7.It’s true that carbon is not good to use in the filter. It is good the water is clear and no smell with carbon in the filter. But you lose something, like natural minerals, trace elements???? The fish will have problems when they are lack of these minerals and trace
elements.

Snails for discus

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

I have one aquarium outside and there is a real problem with algae growth. Are there some snails which are safe to put with my Discus? Can you suggest any particular strain of snail? thanks
very much

Reply:
1. Snails won’t help. You will have endless problems.
2. Keep some scavengers. They will help you to clean up the tanks.
3. They are: Leporacanthicus sp, Cochliodon sp.
