Fight

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

Why does my discus always fight?…Pls reply and tell me why..how long should i wait until my discus can be breed?

Reply:
1.You should describe your fish. How big are they? How they fight. Big fight with small or small fights with big. If big fight with small, its a bully. If small fight big, something is wrong with the big fish. May be she is sick.
2.Breeding – You will wait until both of them are mature

Reply:
1. They will spawn when they are mature and ready.
2. Different strains have different ages of maturity.
3. For example: Melon can spawn as early as when they are 8 to 9 months old. Blue Diamond won’t spawn so early. They take 18 to 24 months to be mature.

Water current (pump too strong)

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

I have a 12x12x60 tank and it has a underground filter. my problem is the pump, when it blows the water out from under the gravel, it comes out very strong making the discus very stress, they tend to hide in the corner, what should I do?. also I have 2 4 1/2 inches discus (wild brown snake) that seems to be getting along very well with each other. How do I distinguished male from female. I want breed them but I don’t know what to do . I see the store owner put a red brick in the tank , how should I proceed, what treatment should I buy to mix with water,? I only have stress syme and amquel to treat chorine, choramine, amonia,.pls.advice,..

Reply:
1.You have a control to adjust the airflow. You can control the air blows out slowly. Actually discus fish don’t mind of strong current.
2.The tank is 5 feet long. You can fix the blowing air one corner. Either left or right-hand side. It seems the source of water comes from one side where the air blows. The fish like it.
3.If they always stay together, and get along very well, it quite possible they are going to pair up.
4.Watch them closely. When they are guarding one territory; chasing others away; cleaning up their territory. Yes they should be a pair.
5.To distinguish male and female is not an easy task. Of course there are many ways to do that when they are matured.
6.Let the nature takes its course. They know themselves very well. Once the female is ready. There will be males, which are also ready to fight among themselves to get her. The winner will spawn with her. Since both the female and male are ready and if they spawn, it will be a successful spawning. If you pick male and female and force them together, they can’t agree to each other. They will fight.

Discus not eating

Monday, April 18th, 2005

I bought 4 small-medium size discus 10 days ago and put them in a 35 gallons tank. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, PH 6.6 temperature 84F and I change 50% of water daily. 2 of the four discus are not eating. I feed them frozen bloodworms and beef heart and the other two discus eat normaly. Please advise me what to do to get all the discus to eat. Why don’t the 2 discus eat?

Reply:
1. Your water condition is normal, which is required by the discus fish.
2. Why they don’t eat? Are they scared? Any things to frighten them?
3. Could be the location of the tank is not right. A lot of activities or movements?
4. Fix an overhead lighting onto the tank. They will feel better.
5. Bloodworm should be ok for the start, and then carry on with the beef-heart.
6. REMEMBER, do not overfeed your fish.
7. Make sure the other 2 fish are not sick.
8. If they are not well, surely they don?t eat.
9. Treat them with Acriflavine and salt after water changed for three days.

Fish go into hiding

Monday, April 18th, 2005

Why do my fish go into hiding when I approach the tank? Those in the shop are not afraid of people. In fact the would swim to you for food. I read in an article once that we should provide them with any hiding place. Is this true?
Also, my fish would not eat pellets but only frozan bloodworms. I find this a little incovenience. How long can they last without food just in case?

Reply:
You are facing environmental problems. For example:You told us you like keeping fish in bare tank. You don’t provide them with hiding place. My fish go into hiding when I approach them.
All these above show your fish don’t feel secured. They are not happy where they stay. They are afraid. All activities around the tank will frighten them.

Discus reproduction

Friday, April 1st, 2005

After convert eggs to little discus fishes, after 1 day they will die.
why?

Reply:
1. From larvae to fry free swimming takes about 4 to 5 days.
2. Have you partially changed water?
3. Have you put any medication to stop fungus growth.
4. Otherwise the water will be polluted. Surely the baby-fish will die.
