After two days parents are eating eggs,or if we are lucky they go to rigglers put parents still eat them would be most greatfull for any help.Have tried covering cone with mesh but still no joy.

Reply:
By nature, parents will not eat their babies.
If they do, there must be some reasons.
a) The babies are not healthy.
b) The babies are sick.
c) The parents feel their babies are not secure.
d) They have been disturbed or frightened.

Sometimes you may have mistaken that they eat babies:
a) Parents clean or bathe their babies. They swallow into mouth and blow them in certain spot.
b) Parents shift their babies to a better or ideal location with mouth. Don’t panic and nervous and do anything to frighten them.

Discus Tank

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

I have had a 29 gallon tank for 3 years very successfully and recently I have gotten into discus. I was wondering if I could keep a group of 4-6 discus in the 29 gallon tank? it is well filtered with an aquaclear 150 and a aquaclear 100. I do water changes every other day about 20%. I would keep them with a 6 cories and a small school of neons. The tank is planted with vallis, dwarf sag, amazon swords, anubias nana and barteri. IN your opinion COULD this work?

Reply:
In your tank with adequate aeration and filter system, you can easily accommodate 6 adult discus. It should be no problem. If you have heavily planted with waterweeds, only worry is not enough supply of oxygen at night. Be alert. For a community tank, water-change 20% is normal.

Frighten Discus

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

I just bought 6 (2.5″) Discus, it’s been a week & they seem to be afraid by hiding at the edge of the tank behind the filter, so it’s quite difficult for me to enjoy the show & feed them.
Do you have any tips how to make them feel comfortable in their new home ? I feed them with beef heart, even I try some bloodworm they are still afraid.
My tank is 100x50x35 cm, and only Discus inside no other fish.

Reply:
They are definitely not happy. If your discus is always hiding, staying in a corner, easily frighten and not going for food when feeding, most likely they are not happy with its surroundings.

You need to find out the reasons and help them:
1. Positioning of aquarium. Vibrations caused by people opening and closing doors, walking up and down the stairs make the fish jumpy and slow to settle down. Put the fish tank in a light traffic area.
2. Fish does not like shadows. It will frighten them. Setup an overhead lighting on the aquarium. The fish will feel better. You can see them better but they cannot see you. All aquarium shops have lighting on their show tanks. The fish are not scared with all the people looking at them.

Breeding

My question to you is put the wire mesh after discus lay eggs then when should I remove the wire mesh or should I leave it until they take care of frys.

Reply:
You cover the eggs with wire mesh after they lay the eggs.
Leave the wire mesh. The larva will stick on the wire mesh after they have hatched out.
You will remove the wire mesh after the fry free swimming.

Which fish can I keep with Discus?

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Can I keep Goldfish,Angels and Sivaram with Discus? How about livebearers like swordtails, mollies, guppies or platys?

Reply:
When you keep many fish of different variety of fish together in one tank, you should consider the following:

Will all the fish take the same food you give?
Will their living habit the same? Like water quality . . .
Fish of different sizes can they live happily?

If you have no choice but to put them together then do it and observe them.
Help your fish to settle their problems if any.

Hyperactive fish!

My discus fish occasionally decides the swim very rapidly to the top of the tank and then darts around furiously, ripping up gravel and plants in a frenzied fit for about 10 seconds. It is quite disturbing. After the fit it breathes heavily for 15 min and then just remains still for a day. Would you know what it is from?

Parents eating eggs and babies

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

We have gotten as far as the 2nd day after hatching the young began to cling to their parents sides then the next morning they were eaten, they also eat eggs before they hatch should i remove eggs or babies into a separate tank?

Reply:
Under their normal behavior, the parents seldom eat their babies. They will protect them instead.
Of course they have exceptional cases. They will eat the babies:
a. They feel the babies are not safe.
b. The babies are not healthy.
c. The babies are sick.
d. The parents are fighting.

Inexperience parents or a new pair will eat their eggs or babies as the parental love have not developed yet. Interchange a new pair and the old pair may help. Then change back.
Be patient. You will succeed.

Reply:
Feeding your discus fish with bloodworm and tetrabit is ok.
Tetrabit has different recipe for the fish. (For adult fish, baby fish, breeders, blue strains, red strains)

Discus Fry

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

I work in breeding discus fish in tabriz Iran. I hatching eggs discus artificial after 50 hours. When fry swimming I had food for fry .after 24 hours fry died. I would be glad of any advice.

Reply:
When you want to do artificial hatching you need to have a complete set of equipment and food to start. How do you do it? You can’t simply leave the fry in the breeding tank to hatch. What happen to the parents? Why can’t they nurse their babies?

My guess to why the fry did not survive …
a. The babies not taking bath; no clean body after born.
b. They died because of no proper food.
c. Water becomes polluted.

Discus Fry with Parents

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Is it true you have to keep the fry with the parents for an extended period of time? If so, why is that? I thought cichlids as a general rule dont like to be crowded with their own kind.

Reply:
If you keep the fry with the parents for an extended period, they will grow faster and more healthier. When the fry still small in size they would not crowd the tank but look harmony.
