Golden Discus Colour change

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

A breeder once told me that if I feed my golden discus with Tetra Bits the yellow colour on their bodies will fade and slowly disappear. Is this true?

Reply:
1. If your fish takes Tetra Bits, the fish looks colorful.
2. Because Tetra Bits contains color enhancer.
3. The color enhancer is more to red.
4. Most likely your golden will show red.
5. The color will not fade.

Turned milky white – fungus

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

I have 2 discus which up until 3 days ago were quite healthy. Then the smallest started turning a dark color and then showed a white spot which turned into a white ring on RH eye. This then turned milky white over whole eye the next day. Then the LH eye did the same. Now the larger discus is showing the same symptoms. Can you tell me what might be wrong and can it be fixed?

Reply:
Fungus attacked due to poor tank management and water quality.
Apply treatment Methylene Blue solution plus salt.
Or Ariflavine solution plus salt.
Water temperature remains 30 degree C.

4. Keep the tank clean with water changed.
5. If you love and care for them they will certainly be happy.

Discus Pairing

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

I have 10 adult LSS discus in a 4 feet tank. They are about 2 years old. There are no signs of pairing up activities in the tank.
I know for sure some are females as they had spawned in the tank before. I only saw suspecting male fighting in the tank but no spawning/shaking activities.

Given the facts that they are mature fish, will they ever pair up and are there anything I can do to induce pairing activities?

Reply:
They should be matured in two years. Feed them heavily with live food for some time.
Change water daily. Observe them very closely. If they have behaved differently, like fighting, chasing, guiding a territory.
Take the pair out in bare breeding tank. They will spawn after some time when they adapt to the new environment.

You know for sure some are females as they had spawned in the tank before. They spawned but failed to guard their eggs, as the other 8 will eat the eggs.

Water Temperature

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

I have been advised that the temperature for these fish is critical and that they need the water cooled and heated to maintain exactly 28 deg.
How true is this? My tank is currently 32 deg (summer in Aust) and the of fish are surviving well.

Reply:
Water temperature between the range of 26 to 30 degree C should be okay.
The change of water temperature should be gradual.
Sudden change of water temperature will stress the fish.
It will give you endless of problems after then.
