Discus fish should be disk-like and round in shape. Their eyes must be clear
and bright. It has small eyes that appropriates to the size of the fish.
This indicates fish is not stunted.

This is most important to the fish. The fish look healthy if they are
lively, bright in colour, come knocking at the glass to ask for food. If the
fish breathe heavily, this shows something wrong with the gill (Gill Fluke).
If you see white dropping faeces, the fish has internal parasites.

If the fish is blue-base, it should be blue and clear. (And so on)
If it is fine or thick lines, the lines must be fine or thick and clear.
If the fish is solid colour (Red, Blue, Gold, White), the colour must be
bright, clear and clean, no peppering or dust.

Eyes colours vary to their base-colours. Most people like red colour.

Fry sucked into the filter

Monday, March 20th, 2006

I have 4 discus and 2 have paired off and have already laid eggs, they laid the eggs on the filter return tube and I am worried that the fry will get sucked into the filter return. Can I place a sponge over it? Should I place a cup or PVC pipe flat or upright for them to lay their eggs?

Reply:
1. You would put that pair of fish in a bare breeding tank for next spawning.
2. Now, to save the eggs already laid, you can stop the filtering system temporary and fix another air outlet to supply air.
3. When larvae free swimming, you can transfer them to the breeding tank.

1. You will buy the 2″ baby fish from one breeders, if possible.
2. Choose the fish that are in one brook or same batch.
3. If you buy 10, pick 5 bigger ones and 5 middle size.
4. You will get at least 3 pairs or more, if you are lucky.
5. The bigger ones are normally males.
6. The smaller ones are normally females.
7. If you buy from the pet shop, usually they are from many batches, then you cannot judge them by size.
