Breeding water change

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Regarding discus breeding pairs water change. How much feeding how many times should lights be off at night in breeding rooms normally when eggs & fry are there?

Reply:
You can change water 25% daily. This is the normal practice. If the pair is not spawning for some time, change 100% of water, then they will spawn.

Feed them once a day preferable live food.
Light is on 24 hours in breeding room if possible. The parents can take care and feed the babies 24 hours.

Create an ideal environment in the breeding room. (Quiet, No disturbances, not much moving activities)

Discus eating wigglers

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

My pair of discus had been laying eggs twice. After two days, the eggs turned into little babies wiggling on the side of a rock. The next day, I saw that all of those babies were gone. Can you tell me why might be the reason the parents were doing this?

Reply:
I presume that your pair of fish must have laid the eggs in the community tank. If you intend to breed discus fish, you will have to get a breeding tank ready. It is a bare bottom tank. There you can see the babies scatter at the bottom or floating on the surface of the tank. The parents too have no difficulty to collect them to a spot. You will not breed successfully in the community tank.

If there are other fish in the tank, surely they will be eaten up. Remember create an ideal environment inside and outside for them to breed happily. See that they are not disturbed.
