Leopard and Leopard Snake Skin

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

I’m interested to keep and breed spotted fish and I have few questions that I would like to ask you:

1. I read mostly in the Internet that discus of size 2.5-3.5 inch DO NOT show spots and if they do show up it must have been fed food that has been mix with hormone (like CR-6, etc), is this true?

2. What is the history of the leopard and leopard snake skin, where do they come from actually ?

3. Is it possible to get good no of fries that will looks like the parents if the parents are full spotted ? from your experience how many percent can we get ?

Reply:
We are glad that you are interested in keeping and breeding spotted fish. They are really very beautiful fish.

1. Spotted discus of size 2.5″ to 3.5′ DO NOT show spots and if they do show it must have been fed food that has been mixed with hormone (like CR-6, etc). They will show spots begin at 3″ and full spots at 4″ to 5″. Of course for those stunted fish will show at their stunted sizes. They are small with full spots but with big eyes.

2. Leopard is developed from Red Turquoise x Spotted Green. And Leopard Snakeskin is developed from Red Snakeskin x Spotted Green many years ago. They have been continuously improving. Many beautiful fish have been improved by crossing Leopard and Leopard Snakeskin.

3. It is not possible to tell how many percents of fries that will look like the parents. It is very much depend on the strain from certain breeders. It is very easily said half-half. It is about 50% Leopard and 50% Leopard Snakeskin.

Angelfish breeding

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Well I have a pair of angelfish that keep on having babies but the babies always die, I always feed the babies and I’ve tried everything but they always die. So if you have any suggestions I would like to hear them.

Reply:
What do you feed the babies?
They are not like discus that the parents can feed them.
So you have to feed them with the baby food.
The are newly hatched brine shrimps, daphnia or chopped worms.
They are hungry so they died.
You may feed them with improper food.

Without the parents

Is it possible to hatch the discus eggs the have laid without the parents help? Can you hatch the eggs in a separate tank after they have laid the eggs?

Reply:
Yes. You can hatch the discus eggs without the parents.
You can either take the pair out from the original tank or take the eggs out to the separate tank to hatch.

You will have to get the newly hatched brine shrimp ready for the fries.
Without that you better don’t try. Otherwise they can get food from their parents.

Water Hardness

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

I know about ph, and temperature, but what does it mean by the water being a certain hardness?

Reply:
Hardness is defined as the concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions expressed in terms of calcium carbonate.

Most natural water supplies contain at least some hardness due to dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. Other minerals, such as iron, may contribute to the hardness of water, but in natural water, they are generally present in insignificant quantities.

Water hardness has a major effect on pH and pH stability. It will affect the toxicity of many common substances, including some fish disease treatments.

Different species of fish have varied water hardness requirements, so it is important to find out what hardness is best for your fish.
