Methylene Blue

I took the advise on putting Methylene Blue in the tank when my discus layed eggs.   Works great,  question is when to return the carbon to the filter to start to clear the water  and how much of a water change should be done when they go from wigglers to free swimmers.  Almost appears to me that the parents have a little bit of a hard time following the fry with the tank being blue?  Please let me know if i should let it run its course or do frequent water changes to lighten the water after they become fry.

Reply:
The breeding tank should be bare bottom.
You need only air stone and no filter.
You will siphon the dirt at the bottom of the tank then top up the water.
The color of water can even be in dark blue. The parents will feel more secured. They do not feel much shadow falls on them.
You can change water 2 – 3 times a day. (20%)

How discus breeding in Malaysia made possible from wild discus in Amazon.
Wild discus lives in water which is acidic pH 5.0
Our water in Malaysia is alkalic pH 7.0

During that time breeding them is almost impossible.
We made water acidic and low pH using natural methods.
We keep dry leaves in water to keep pH low and acidic.
After many batches of fish from Brazil keeping in Malaysia then we got the first batch babies.

      Nothing is impossible.
What you need is patient ever ready to make attempts and try outs.

If you are a hobbyist, it is convienant to use PH Lower solution which you can buy from aquarium store to lower the PH. Using leaves methods works by putting into the tank allowing it to decay and therefore releasing acids (tannins) into the water. You can use any leaves from trees, preferable those that decay at a slow rate and safe to use.

High body is the result result of selective breeding and shrimps improve the color on red strains. Do look for commercially cultured tubiflex worms that are hygienically processed, if not you have to clean them as follows:
      1) put them in a shallow tray and clean them with water until clear of mud or sand, leaving only the worms
      2) keep in a cool place and continually wash them with water, minimal 3 times a day (morning, afternoon, night)
      3) if possible continuously run water at a slow rate into the tray.
      4) keep repeating step 2 for 3 to 5 days, to clean the guts
      5) a day before feeding them to discus, add antibiotic (Tetracycline) into the tray to remove bacteria.
